We Promote Self-Sufficiency
Since 1986, Project Self-Sufficiency (PS-S) has been creating opportunity for low-income, single parent families in Larimer County who are struggling to make ends meet and overcome the cycle poverty. From educational development and career planning to adequate child care access and housing, the program is a comprehensive resource providing everything a single parent needs to become self-sufficient:
Education & Training
Promote Family Health
Encourage Self Advocacy
We are a local nonprofit organization supported by United Way, local governments, and private funders. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender expression, national origin, age or disability.
The mission of Project Self-Sufficiency is to assist low-income, single parents in their efforts to build and maintain strong, healthy families; achieve economic independence; and become free from community and government assistance.
PS-S evolved from the efforts of a countywide task force that met in 1985 to better coordinate and expand services for low-income, single parents and their children while encouraging the families toward greater self-sufficiency. Task force members pledged resources, including staff time and housing assistance for families, and the new project began in October 1986 with the enrollment of 65 families. Current program capacity is 150 families.
In 1989, a special program was added to address the specific housing needs of PS-S participants. Through a cooperative effort between Project Self-Sufficiency and the Housing Authority of the City of Loveland, the award winning Willow Place apartment complex was designed and constructed specially for single parent families participating in PS-S. The 20 families residing at Willow Place receive both a rent subsidy and housing in a unique setting that encourages mutual support among families and a sense of community.
During 1992, PS-S became incorporated under the name Project Self-Sufficiency of Loveland-Fort Collins and was approved for 501(c)(3) charitable status by the IRS. Since that time numerous program elements have been added, including the “Cars for Families” donation and repair programs, the scholarship fund, the emergency fund, the Boundless Children’s Fund, self-esteem and other classes, holiday programs, child care assistance, and “Cool Kids” back-to-school clothes for children.
