We are dedicated to helping individuals and families in need create positive and lasting change through social service programs that support and empower them to live safe, healthy and productive lives. Our Name The name Volunteers of America was chosen in 1896 to describe an organization comprised of people voluntarily choosing to help others. When co-founders Maud and Ballington Booth tried out names for their new organization 114 years ago, one word made the short list and remained prominent: “volunteer.” Today, more than 1,300 paid staff form our work force but we still rely on the generous support of thousands of volunteers each year.
