Center of Excellence Child Development Center Director






BA or BS in Early Childhood, Elementary Education, Child Development or related field with Early Childhood Experience. Preferred: Current license from the Minnesota Department of Education for Pre-Kindergarten/Nursery or Infant/Toddler Teacher Certificate or Child Care Specialist Certificate or Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Certificate.


The Lead Preschool Teacher supervises the Assistant Preschool Teacher, volunteers, interns and practicum students.


The Lead Preschool Teacher runs the preschool classroom based on a philosophy of trauma informed principles and culturally responsive care. The Lead Preschool Teacher works with the assistant teacher to provide a warm, loving, atmosphere, and support the development of children ages 3 – 5 years and their parents . Must be able to work and plan in a team setting, with patience, enthusiasm and respect for children, as well as parents and fellow staff.


Understands the social-emotional developmental needs of children.
Understands the impact of toxic stress and trauma on children and their families, and can implement and build on the trauma-informed framework developed in the classrooms.
Understanding of and willingness to implement sensory integration in the classroom.
In collaboration with other lead teachers the lead preschool teacher will plan, develop, and facilitate curriculum for young children in a developmentally appropriate setting based heavily in social-emotional development.
Continually updates curriculum to meet the needs of students and requirements of the center.
Encourages and teaches pre-literacy skills such as letter sounds and letter recognition.
Encourages oral communication with other children and adults.
Encourages social skills, such as sharing with and helping others.
Encourages developmental skills such as color recognition, shapes, counting, reading, writing and improvement of gross motor skills.
Works closely with Minneapolis Public Schools to refer children who might have special needs.
Administers basic first aid and cares for sick children.
Welcomes, talks with and meets with parents.
Observes, evaluates, and assesses children’s progress.
Observes and reports on physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of children.
Creates monthly and daily communications for parents such as daily reports and monthly newsletters.
Maintains clean classroom appearance by organizing, cleaning, and sanitizing daily.
Keeps track of any classroom supply needs.
Participates in trainings as required by licensing and/or accreditation.
Participates in Trauma Informed Healing and Cultural Competency trainings in relation to the focus of the Child Development Center.
Collaborates with People Serving People shelter programs and staff as needed.
Participates as an Associate within People Serving People, Inc.
Maintains appropriate program records.
Completes first aid and Red Cross certified CPR training every 2 years.
Completes yearly in-service training equal to 1-2% of the number of hours worked.
Completes required trainings and documentation for Parent Aware rating.
Performs other duties assigned by the Center of Excellence Child Development Center Director.

Knowledge of Trauma Informed Care principles and models.
Knowledge of the developmental and emotional needs of young children.
Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in a child development center.
Knowledge of basic health and first aid techniques.
Skill in coping with a variety of behaviors.
Skill in working with children, their families and the public.
Skill in evaluating situations.
Ability to determine the needs of children.
Ability to teach developmental, social, and emotional skills.
Ability to establish a warm and supportive relationship with the children and their parents or guardians.
Ability to keep accurate records.
Ability to articulate program goals and philosophy and apply it to working in the Early Childhood Development Program.

Three or more years of experience working as a lead or assistant teacher in a Child Care Setting.
Two or more years of experience serving multi-cultural, socially diverse population desired.
First Aid and CPR certified or willing to be certified within 90 days of employment.

Basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft applications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must lift and/or move 70 lbs.


The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can be loud at times.

To serve homeless children and their families and provide new opportunities for healthy, stable family life.

People Serving People achieves its mission and goals by providing emergency housing and community services that assist families experiencing homelessness in becoming self-sufficient and reconnected with the community. In a safe, secure and sober environment, PSP provides services which cultivate independence and accountability.

What distinguishes PSP from other emergency shelters is the broad range of on-site programs and services designed to address common barriers that homeless families are faced with. To provide a new opportunity for families, it is necessary that we help them find ways to break through these barriers and stop patterns that lead to poverty and homelessness. Housing and employment issues are addressed, along with educational, emotional and life enrichment needs.

People Serving People, Inc. (PSP) was incorporated and received its 501(c)(3) status in 1982, as a temporary homeless shelter for men with chemical dependencies. The first location was the former Francis Drake Hotel.

Over the past twenty years homelessness changed from affecting mostly men with chemical and mental health problems, to affecting families with children.

PSP saw the need to adapt to the changing homeless population and became an emergency shelter for men and/or women with families and unaccompanied youth. Some nights the number of homeless children PSP sheltered soared to nearly 500. To accommodate families, PSP opened an additional building to provide safe and sober emergency housing. In 1987, Hennepin County began to refer families to PSP. These referrals, and the development of cooperative ventures with community agencies, prompted PSP to offer a holistic approach by providing on-site collaborative services, which we continue today.

Concentrating its services on homeless families in the late 1990s, PSP conducted focus groups and compiled a feasibility study relative to the type of facility and services that were needed to serve the seven county homeless population. It was determined that PSP should own a single, larger location near the city's core. In the fall of 1997, PSP embarked on a capital campaign and purchased a building at 614 S. 3rd Street, in downtown Minneapolis.

In 2002, People Serving People renovated and moved into its new location. The facility was crafted so that 21 other agencies could be housed on-site. Our current facility has 10 floors and a lower level full service dining hall; including seven floors for emergency housing, offering 99 hotel-size rooms and 10 two-bedroom apartments. There are four service floors containing a dining room, two libraries, several classrooms, collaborative agency offices, medical clinic, one infant and one preschool center, computer lab, and more.
